[On an unseasonably warm day in March, Hinata arrives at Apartment 805 as Steve is leaving. Due to some bustle — Hinata wobbling groceries precariously and gelatinously onto the counter, Steve deciding at the last minute to change from one bomber jacket into another, almost identical bomber jacket — they don't exchange more than a hey, plus a mumbled thank-you-you're-welcome when Steve majestically catches a carton of eggs that falls from the hand that Hinata's body suddenly decides doesn't exist anymore. The crowd goes wild.]
[It's reasonable that Hinata dismisses a few mumbled words from Steve out of his line of sight as the pooka talking to himself. And then Steve leaves, and that's it. Hinata is alone in the apartment with the groceries.]
[And the wisteria vine curling down the wall above the island, as though growing out of the ceiling itself. It's there when Hinata turns around, but it wasn't there before. Probably? He'd probably have noticed that.]
[Despite the intertwining mess of circumstances that got him here, rooming with Steve wasn't so bad. He was perfectly friendly, and there was a lot more space here, instead of awkwardly dancing around Ikusaba and Celeste. Hinata was even... uh, starting to get better at keeping himself together. It was worse when he was stressed, which, he kind of was a lot-- but at least the small instance, Steve was quick enough to catch the eggs when his hand gave out.
The kitchen... could use some work. But, that was for Hinata to deal with, for now. He makes sure all the groceries are safely on the counter, and turns to shaking his arm out to get his hand to reform, as Steve's out the door.
But it felt like... he wasn't alone, for some reason? Steve had left, right? Maybe he was being paranoid, but he turns around to look at the door-- and catches the vine growing out of the ceiling, instead.]
What the...?
[Had that always been there? He didn't... think so? Steve did have plenty of plants around. But he turns his attention towards the plant anyway, squinting his one eye as he cranes his head upward... and tries to shuffle his wandering red eye into place, so he can actually look in stereo.]
[A teeny little package arrives for Hinata at his apartment after Maya has shaken down a number of people for the mystery slime friend's location. Once connected, she sends him a box about the size of two decks of cards filled with cookies shaped like dolphins that are only about the size of a half-dollar each.
On top of the little box is a card. It reads;
Thank you for listening to me cry like a baby the other day!
Under that is a doodle of a crying cloud that must be a shade next to some green goop. There is an arrow pointing to each; the crying cloud's arrow says 'me, a baby'; the green goop's says 'you, a nice slime'.
It's simply signed "Maya", with the number to her communicator written on the bottom in the tiniest, neatest little handwriting you ever did see.]
[ Strangely, living alongside a ball of slime comes with lots of perks.
The ball takes care of dinner so he doesn't have to worry about it if he doesn't feel like picking something up. The ball knows how to fix anything that breaks around the apartment. The leak under the sink. That one faulty lightswitch. The drywall in the bathroom that used to be littered with scratchmarks. The ball also cleans up any messes that are left around, including his own when he loses control of his surface tension—a fancy term Steve learned from Giorno, who found observing Hinata to be quite interesting.
Last month, Hinata scoured, re-scoured, and stocked the kitchen while Steve mostly stayed out of his way, doing his own thing sorting out his brand new VHS stash in the living room. Occasionally, he was mentally assaulted by random fun factoids as Hinata tried his best not to spill his entire life story to the world like everyone else. There was a lot of information about plant biology, salsa composition, the anatomy of various electronics, and more mixed in that Steve sadly won't be retaining more than five percent of.
Anyway, the point is, Steve has seen (and heard via psychic TTS) enough that he's come to accept that the thing about Hinata having a billion special talents is true. It's on his mind right now as he loafs on the couch, not feeling like going out ever since he went to the mall the other day and came back looking like a kid's stuffed animal. ]
[The apartments in 38-8 weren't exactly the lap of luxury, but they were cozy and lived-in, and Hinata had acclimated pretty accurately. After cleaning up the kitchen, at least.
It had especially provided a boon during the hell of the psychic-network nonsense, with a million extra thoughts added to his own. In a little over a week he'd fixed just about everything there was to fix in the apartment-- even some of the wiring in the walls, for which being able to just squirm into the wall instead of removing it had been surprisingly helpful. Fix up the faucet, improve the pressure in the shower head, tune up the stove, replace a light bulb that had apparently broken during Lila's whole electricity flare up that neither of them had noticed. Sort through the cartridges he'd found fallen from the sky, and also maybe he'd taken apart an Atari along with the toaster. He could see how Souda could get obsessed with this kind of stuff, even if Hinata was just desperately looking for distractions. When he'd run out of that to do he'd returned to the kitchen, and had spent one day just making strawberry jam. But again, at least he cleaned up the mess.
He had, at least, tried to not bother Steve with his... frantic... nonsense. He hadn't touched his VHS tapes except for organizing them a little, and once the invasive thoughts were finally gone, he stopped tittering around the apartment like a hummingbird on caffeine, and slept for like an entire day afterwards. And with anything else... he'd just sort of stayed in his lane for all of that.
At least now, even with the weird fog surrounding the mall, things were still sort of quiet. Hinata had spent a day running around taking care of Nanami and making sure she was safe and happy, and then he'd come home to Steve looking like an oversized Easter toy from America. It had to do with the fog, somehow, but admittedly Hinata couldn't help but laugh at the time.
He sits on the floor of the living room for now, even though Steve barely takes up half the couch-- but he was also busy tapping away on one of the gameboys he'd recovered, in the middle of a game of Tetris.]
Hm? [He looks up quickly for a moment when Steve asks his question, though his eyes return to the game as he speaks.]
Sure. How to sing properly from your diaphragm standing up straight, pitches of the vocal range, voice exercises, how to control your voice to hit the right notes, harmonizing with other voices or instruments, counteracting your head voice...
[At least now when the random facts fly out from his head, he's the only one that hears them again.
[Hinata has once again returned to his natural state, which was laying on the ground and staring at the ceiling-- but at least he has his own apartment to do it in this time, assuming Steve didn't slip on him. But he watches the messages trickle in, and felt like he was trying to squint through the fog.]
[So, Trish knows where Hinata lives (non-threatening). Mostly because Steve has inhabited this particular part of 38-8 since she's known him, although she doesn't typically drop by to visit. The last time she came, it was with a bunch of their friends-turned-children in tow, and that was very temporary.
Now she's back, but it's important, okay. It's not every day she loses her mind to this place...in fact, the movie world is the first time she's woken up to the horrible realization that she had completely lost control of herself.
Is it necessary to apologize? Maybe not, but she also wants to make sure he understands that what happened was not either of their faults. He's new enough to this place she's worried how he'll interpret it. And she's done enough of saying nothing at all and assuming things were fine when they very much weren't.
So today, at ass'o'clock in the morning, Trish Una is knocking on the door of 805 and will stand back with her hands on her hips as she waits for an answer.]
[Maybe it's not necessary to apologize, but Hinata is certainly still shouldering that guilt, and avoiding doing anything with it anyway. God forbid it allow him to sleep in, but he didn't have to head to the casino for another few hours, and so he was just sloughed in the middle of the living room floor, barely half awake, or barely half aware.
But the knock at least brings him back to awareness, and he jolts with a start, refilling into his clothes and into humanoid shape as he sat up in front of the coffee table.
It took him a minute to figure out how to stand up again, but he got there, quickly making his way over to open the door, and...]
[ Lucky for Hinata, the garage is actually less hot than usual, thanks to Souda's no longer being a gargoyle. The garage doors are open, the windows as well, and Souda's busily working on a for-now separated part of Jonathan's bus project while the rest of it still stands out in the parking lot nearby.
Souda still ends up jumping in surprise when Hinata approaches, perhaps even jumpier than usual as a pooka, but he doesn't actually seem irritated. He's never been great at fighting the psychological influences of the monsters he's been, and as awkward as things have been since the battle royale movie, Souda can't help that the monster part of him wants to be near his friends. His tail flicks around, and the half-pink half-white jerboa bounces over his project before walking up to his jellified friend.]
Oh dude! You really brought 'em! I thought you were gonna wuss out for sure!
[Why...?
Anyway, Souda eagerly pokes through the cornettos, studying before he says—]
Man, I guess I thought Italian food would just look different, y'know?
You thought I would wuss out on delivering old pastries...?
[Should he feel insulted? He feels like he should be insulted. But he just meets it with his usual dry wonderings whenever he seems to be around Souda. As if nothing happened! See?
Hinata places one hand on his hip, tilting his head in a way that just made him look like Akane.] Did you think it wouldn't look like real food or something...? [What did he think italian food would look like. This is worrying.]
[ On the morning of the 25th, Hinata will receive a medium-sized wrapped package. Inside is:
- First, a comfortable bright orange hoodie.
- Laid atop the hoodie is a shimmering rainbow tie, for all Hinata's tie needs.
- Packed safely inside the hoodie is something that Nanami got Souda's help with. It's not quite a GGA, but it's pretty close - a bit rough around the edges, but the distinctive light blue of Hinata's old one. Souda borrowed Nanami's and reverse-engineered it to make more. On top of the console is a little note with a picture of a link cable on it, and the scribbled words "co-op mode enabled!"
- Finally, at the bottom of the package, is a small photo album. Inside are pictures of Hinata's friends - Trish playing the bass; Mukuro cooking at home; Souda waving with a wrench; the Grapevine crew posing for a picture; Steve and Giorno making silly faces at the camera; Riley and Cairo waving awkwardly; and more besides, including a few friends now departed - Rika & Satoko working at the arcade, Red posing outside her den.
At the back of the album are copies of the gift Nanami received from the Nattenskatt - a few candid pictures of class 77 themselves, at festivals and parties and hanging out together. Between the pictures, every member of the class is accounted for. ]
[It's that time of year again, and Hinata will find a decently sized box with his name on it resting outside his apartment door (with an additional, very large note that any theft of such will be hunted down with impunity by a very angry bear). It's held in odd but fairly tame wrapping paper; in what appears to be a stroke of habit, the box is wrapped with red string that fixes a card snugly in place. The card itself has two sides, one adorned with a design of various cats baking together, and the other side normally blank but now adorned with neat, tightly written cursive from La Befana. She's back for another year! However, this is the first time she's visited his abode. Regardless, it will be very obvious who it's from in short order, if the note hadn't already given it away.
For Hinata, the holiday card attached reads:
To a dear friend with no energy and yet a tirelessness matched by few.
Buon Natale e felice anno nuovo.
(Yours is a steady foundation on which you build others up and up and up, until they can reach what they thought would be long out of their grasp.
Don't forget to maintain yourself though, if you want to be that rock. For the sake of everything you want to accomplish, remember that you are the center of those desires, even if they aren't about you. That way, we can all stand strong together.)
[ The party goes on past midnight; after everyone's left, Nanami cleans everything up - and then she goes straight to the community center.
She signed up for nearly all of the front desk shifts in the first half of the day as she could; to give Hinata a chance to sleep in on his birthday. It's the least she can do!
She hasn't stopped being nocturnal, though. So whatever time Hinata makes his way to the community center, the mouse pooka is snoozing, head resting on her arms on the desk. It's a fitful sleep - her whiskers keep twitching, snout snuffling at something invisible. And there's a small pink box on the desk next to her. ]
[The definitely-not-a-joint-birthday-party is already far and beyond anything anyone's ever done for Hinata's birthday in the past-- honestly, he's just shocked that anyone would've remembered his birthday, much less with how much things happen in Ryslig. Which is to say, they happen a lot. Watching the front desk was completely unneeded, but Nanami insisted, and he eventually gave up the argument.
But that doesn't mean he won't at least show up bright and early to the center, to check on both the building and Nanami both. The air outside is still cold and crisp, but it's almost refreshing, even if he just shows up in a jacket that is far too thin for the winter season. But, y'know, monster upsides and everything.
She's practically dead asleep by the time he shows up, and he can't help but feel a little bad about it; but he still smiles fondly at her where she can't see it, his expression soft as he gives her a gentle pat on the head at her sleepy, dreamy twitching and sniffling. Maybe he should grab one of the blankets from the sleep rooms, since it was pretty cold out, and pookas were warm-blooded... Though before he has a chance, as he places his own bag on the desk a foot or so away, he notices the little box.
...Well, he's mostly just curious, so he picks it up without really thinking about it, squinting and inspecting it for some kind of clue to its contents.]
[The message arrives in Hinata's inbox sometime after Fishquest 2023, late in the evening.
(Never mind that they also kind of share a home? But we're assuming Hinata is either A. actively Not There B. not immediately noticeable)]
Hinata-kun, I want to be understanding towards you, so I'm sending you this message... But surely you had a reason for not telling Nanami-san the full depth of what happened in the Neo World program, a reason other than your own cowardice, right?
She's been in Ryslig for almost a year, and she had no idea what really happened to us. Don't you think that's a little unfair?
[Just because you can have a lovely trip to the cove didn't mean there wasn't still work to be done when they got back-- especially when you still had, like, four jobs. He's down at the community center right now, which is nice, because at least there he has a desk for his laptop, and so doesn't fumble it when the message comes in.]
what's this about all of a sudden? I think I told her a bit about the tragedy and everything, and the school being destroyed...
a lot of the stuff that happened in there it doesn't really feel like my place to explain
is it really that important?
[yes, but he also wishes he could melt out of this conversation?]
[ Nanami had dropped what she was doing - it's not important right now, if there's things Hinata wants to talk to her about - needs to talk about -
But it's still a short wait after truth or dare before the slime manages to ooze her way over to the street where the Cube is located. She enters right away, looking around for him in the lobby. ]
[Deep breaths. It was his idea after all-- because Hinata is notoriously horrible at wanting to avoid talking about the important things, and everyone knows it. Or, at least Komaeda knows it. And this... is the only way he can think to get himself to sit down (metaphorically), get his thoughts together instead of babbling like a jumbled mess, like he had when he'd first tried to explain Izuru to Nanami.
He's easy enough to find in the lobby, all bright yellow with his usual anxious energy, and the room's already set up.] H-Hey... sorry, I know this is kind of-- weird, and sudden... [But if he doesn't now then it's gonna be another six months if it was up to him?? Which, it so rarely is, in Ryslig.
But before he can let himself start babbling, he waves for Nanami to follow him; and when they enter the right room, it's... the trial room. Aggravatingly familiar to Hinata, who could probably remake it from memory, as long as he didn't have to add all of Monokuma's overdramatic redecorations. But otherwise it's just oddly formal and ostentatious, empty of any death portraits to stare at them from beyond the pale.
Another deep breath, and eventually, the yellow color starts to bleed back to green, as he turns and faces her.]
Okay. Whatever you want to ask me, about the Tragedy, Ultimate Despair, or the Future Foundation... do it here. Just think of it like... a really drawn out truth or dare.
Hinata, i wanted to apologize to you for my behavior on Joshua's post.
i really am sorry for being such a jerk, though of everyone on the post, i think you took it...i don't know if i can say the "best," but better than most. so i should thank you for that at least.
but all the same...i'm really, truly sorry.
[Hinata being an asshole back to Ryou actually made Ryou feel better once he came back to his senses. It was deserved, and it was right. Go figure.]
[On the morning of the 14th, and every subsequent day after so long as the groundhog week persists, Hinata will find a box of chocolates (homemade, if the char is anything to go by) and pink roses on his pillow, along with a card that reads:]
Happy Valentine's day Hinata-kun,
It's our first Valentine's as boyfriends, and I want you to know, this is the first time I've ever made chocolate from scratch, so please go easy on me if the taste is bad. I can't say I ever imagined doing something as domestic as making chocolates for my boyfriend, but... It made me really happy. You make me happy.
I love you, Hinata-kun. Thank you for always caring for a no good guy like me.
-Komaeda Nagito
Pretend I didn't forget to add this to his valentine
[In addition to the homemade chocolates, Komaeda will gift Hinata an illustration done by a familiar artist he may or may not know. The illustration is of him, Komaeda, and Nanami together and smiling as their human selves, in their school uniforms.]
[Does it make sense to send this message through the network, rather than telling Hinata to his face? Probably not, considering that it isn't something so casual... But, following his conversation with Ryou, he doesn't quite have the courage to face Hinata directly.
He's feeling shaky, and he doesn't know how honest he would truly be, if they were face to face. So Hinata will likely have this message coming his way at an odd hour—when Komaeda knows he's busy with work—and left as a means of starting a conversation he doesn't exactly want to be pacing circles over.]
Hinata-kun, would you say that... I am not all of myself? As in, do you think I hold myself back too much?
[No, no, something like this is too abstract isn't it? Hinata might not get it if he doesn't say it fully.]
I agree that I definitely put the comfort and happiness of others first, but isn't it important to make sure that I don't do things that would make people hate me? Especially after everything we did in our world, the last thing I want to do here is hurt anyone.
Anyways! Please take your time responding to this. Or please ignore it, if it's too troublesome to answer. Either way, I will definitely not be waiting for your reply.
[well that sure sounded like the suspiciously specific words of someone that was pacing around back and forth waiting for a reply.
Still, it's not like he's any stranger to getting messages at odd hours, or weird messages from Komaeda out of nowhere-- and he doesn't really mind it, either.]
I mean you definitely go out of your way to try and make other people happy even if you do it in a really weird way sometimes...
I suppose... back on the island I never had any idea what you were thinking or what you wanted sometimes it was hard to tell if you were trying to help us or get us killed. even if it's confusing, I get what you were trying to do now but I guess if you're on the outside looking in, you do tend to be someone that's hard to understand.
<zhar-ptitsa>; post-hanahaki
komaeda said i should talk to you.
[is she gonna say who she— no. no, that is not gonna happen.]

Nattensfest
una lettera di Nattensfest per te
For Hinata, the holiday card attached reads:
To a dear friend with no energy and yet a tirelessness matched by few.
Buon Natale e felice anno nuovo.
(Yours is a steady foundation on which you build others up and up and up, until they can reach what they thought would be long out of their grasp.
Don't forget to maintain yourself though, if you want to be that rock. For the sake of everything you want to accomplish, remember that you are the center of those desires, even if they aren't about you. That way, we can all stand strong together.)
Inside the box, Hinata will find a a tiny plush worker! Isn't he jolly? He seems to be a preamble to the real set of gifts, which are an insanely fancy tea set with gold abounding and an air of decadence to the animal illustrations within, a marbled incense holder accompanied by a swath of scents, and a carpenter's toolset, with a note that specifies it should be for personal projects from here on out.
Cheers, Hinata.]
jan 1st, action, you know why i'm here
She signed up for nearly all of the front desk shifts in the first half of the day as she could; to give Hinata a chance to sleep in on his birthday.
and on his BIRTHDAY

<MainSqueeze>
what's this about all of a sudden?
I think I told her a bit about the tragedy and everything, and the school being destroyed...
a lot of the stuff that happened in there
it doesn't really feel like my place to explain
is it really that important?

But it's still a short wait after truth or dare before the slime manages to ooze her way over to the street where the Cube is located. She enters right away, looking around for him in the lobby. ]
Hello?...

<WhiteWizard>, after 1/29
i really am sorry for being such a jerk, though of everyone on the post, i think you took it...i don't know if i can say the "best," but better than most. so i should thank you for that at least.
but all the same...i'm really, truly sorry.
[Hinata being an asshole back to Ryou actually made Ryou feel better once he came back to his senses. It was deserved, and it was right. Go figure.]

Happy Valentine's! [Feb 14th-17th]
<MrBrightside>
<MainSqueeze>
Still, it's not like he's any stranger to getting messages at odd hours, or weird messages from Komaeda out of nowhere-- and he doesn't really mind it, either.]
I mean you definitely go out of your way to try and make other people happy
even if you do it in a really weird way sometimes...
I suppose... back on the island I never had any idea what you were thinking or what you wanted
sometimes it was hard to tell if you were trying to help us or get us killed.
even if it's confusing, I get what you were trying to do now
but I guess if you're on the outside looking in, you do tend to be someone that's hard to understand.
